MEET THE STUDENT ARCHEOLOGISTS |
Karina and Jeremy are college students from Iowa State University. They
were doing a summer internship in the Archeodome at the Prehistoric Indian Village. We
asked them, "Why do you want to dig in the dirt all summer? Jeremy
answered, "It's like Christmas every day. You never know what
you are going to find, You get blisters,
dirty fingernails, worn out jeans, but it's fun." Peter Winham,
their internship teacher is from Augustana College in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota.

Question: When did you say, "I'm going to be an archeologist?
|

|
|

|
| Karina: At first, I wanted to be a Paleontologist. In high school I liked math and science. When I found
out I would be in an office with mechanical engineering, I decided on archeology so I
could be outside more.. |
|
Jeremy: I was watching all the fun they were having in Indiana
Jones. I wanted to do that. I also helped with an archeology dig by my house
in high school. |
Question: What was the most exciting discovery you've made in
archeology and where have you worked?
|
| Karina:: In Milford, Iowa, at the Oneota
dig we
found points and brass tinklers. These were used on the armor breastplate. |
|
Jeremy: I worked on digs in the Middle East
including Israel and Jordan. I have
also worked in the Black Hills. We were studying soil samples to see if the ground
where they wanted to do construction had artifacts. If it did, then steps would need
to be taken to protect the artifacts. |
Question: How do you become an archeologist?
|
Karina and Jeremy: To be an
archeologist you must study anthropology which is a study of people
groups. Archeology is a subject area under anthropology. To get
hired as an archeologist you need to get a Master's degree which means
about 6 years of college.
