History: Part 1
|
The people who lived in this village are
"prehistoric" because they lived a thousand years ago and no one wrote
their "history". We don't know what they were called, and there is no
mention of them in any historical record.
They are thought to have traveled up the Mississippi River system. Lake Mitchell did
not exist when they lived here. The Firesteel Creek would have run past this area.
The people came to a site set up a settlement.
From what has been found, we know they grew beans and corn, made pottery, clothing, and tools, and hunted
buffalo. We really don't know what brought them here or what made them leave.
They may have ran out of trees to build dwellings and to use for
heat. Then they maybe just traveled to a place further up river
when the buffalo moved or when another group got close.
As far as we know, they were a peaceful, farming community. Nothing has been found
to suggest any battles in this area. It is thought that these people could be
ancestors of the Mandan Indians in North Dakota since their lodges and life styles were
similar.
